On June 22nd, 2012, Tra Vinh University (TVU) held a talk with its students at the Center of Student Education in Defense and Security.

Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh – TVU Rector Board along with other representative leaders of offices, faculties and centers of TVU had a direct exchange with over 450 students, representatives from different courses of TVU.

 The talk received more than 40 questions sent beforehand to the Organizing Board and 30 questions directly asked. In their questions, students expressed their needs and aspirations to know clearly about TVU such as the training organization, the facilities, the policies and regimes for students, soft skills, and especially jobs after graduation. All questions were enthusistically answered through which students could grasp more about the present activities of the university where they have been studying.

Besides creating a good connetion between leaders of TVU and students, the talk has helped TVU’ leaders learn more about their students’ needs and expectations so that they can perform and have appropriate solutions to create the best learning environment for the students.

On this occasion, TVU granted 30 scholarships cost 15,000,000 VND for students with outstanding results in studying as well as in the activities or movements .

On June 25th, 2012, Center of International Cooperation in Education and Training (Cicet) of Tra Vinh University (TVU) held a meeting with the topic “Cicet and learners- Bridging the knowledge gap” in order to get a close relationship between learners and the Center as well as to honor those with outstanding academic records.

The meeting was honored to welcome Ms. Thach Thi Dan- Vice Rector of TVU a long with representatives of offices, faculties and Centers of TVU; a representative of Tra Vinh newspaper and over 60 best learners.

In her opening speech, Vice Rector –Thach Thi Dan emphasized that during the learning process, especially the long-term foreign language program, it was certain that we would get many difficulties as well as challenges. In her opinion, with the dedication of TVU teaching staff, the support of many sponsors and their efforts, the learners will get best results in the learning process as well as the self- practicing. 

           Also, the meeting was held aiming at opening the English course for learners of future Master level and to deliver scholarships for learners with best scores in the last IELTS exam on the 9th of June. Mr. Nguyen Tien Thinh- a student of Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Ms. Tran Thi Huynh Anh- a student of Faculty of Economics, Law and Foreign Languages got the best results and received two full scholarships; each cost eight millions dong.

In addition, Cicet also gave eight full scholarships and eight half scholarships for other good students. Especially, it always helps needy students by giving scholarships for those who studying at the Center. For example, Cicet gave a scholarship of 500,000 dong for Ms. Trieu Thi To Hoa- a student of English major, course 2011.

Particularly, the meeting was more exciting with the musical items, game shows and solving riddles with gifts, etc. By the end of the meeting, Ms. Chau Thi Hoang Hoa- Director of Cicet expressed her gratitude to learners’ parents as well as the sponsors. Having the confidence of the parents and the support of the sponsors, Cicet will continue its training tasks to bring the most favorable studying opportunities for learners of Cicet as well as students of TVU.

Approved by the MOET (Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA), on June 16th, 2012, Vietnam Association of Community Colleges (VACC) held a Conference to make a preliminary review the activities of thefirst six months of the year 2012 at STVC (SaiGon Tourism Vocational College) in District 10, HCMC. The Conference was honored to welcome Prof. Dr. Sci. Bui Van Ga- Vice Minister of the MOET, other representatives of the MOET, of the MOHA and all members of VACC.

Established in 2006, VACC had ten members which were universities, colleges and vocational schools in the whole country. Up to now, VACC includes 53 members and constantly strives to improve the quality of education management and training, to become a model of advanced education and training and to be a preeminent one in Vietnam.

At the meeting, Mr. Pham Phat- Vice President of VACC presented the report on the activities of VACC during the first six months such as admitting new members, exchanging among the members, strengthening and expanding collaboration with international organizations, proposing the regular regulations about Community College, etc. Overall, VACC has completed its plan in the first six months of 2012 and proposes the plan for the last six months of 2012.

In his speech at the Conference, Prof. Dr. Bui Van Ga affirmed that the community college model showed its effectiveness and suitability in Vietnam in training the human resource for the community. Besides, he also suggested VACC to advertising this model as well as its importance to public by the media.

On behalf of VACC, Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh- president of VACC sent thanks to the supporting of Ministries, Departments to VACC and expressed gratitude to the members in building successfully the community model in the previous time.

From 11th to 14th of June, 2012, the Delegation of Tra Vinh University (TVU) led by Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung- TVU Vice Rector paid a visit and worked at Southern Leyte State University (SLSU).

During the visit, TVU’s Delegation was guided to tour the facilities of SLSU and shared some researching activities such as plant tissue growing, farming and aquaculture, especially the transferring of technology for farmers.

Also on this visit, the Delegation made a tour around the production facilities of the local farmers who have applied the combination model between breeding, farming and ecotourism transferred by SLSU.  

Introduced by SLSU, the Delegation of TVU met and worked with Philippine Coconut Authority where the techniques of implanting coconut sap sugar embryo and processing the products from coconut sap sugar were carried out successfully.

On June 19th, 2012, TVU’s Delegation worked with PCRDF (Philippine Coconut Research and Development Foundation). At the meeting, TVU and PCRDF discussed and came into mutual agreement on collaborating to do some researches in the coming time.

The visit to SLSU helped the collaboration between TVU and SLSU be closer through the specific researches on agriculture of the two universities and brought a new opportunity for TVU to collaborate with Philippine Coconut Authority. In the same time, it also helped the research staff of TVU have a chance to share and to learn experiences with the research staff of SLSU.

On June 9th, 2012, Tra Vinh University (TVU) solemnly held the Graduation Ceremony for Distance Learning Graduates. Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh- Rector of TVU and Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung – Vice Rector of TVU attended the Ceremony and granted the degrees to the Graduates. On this Ceremony, TVU granted 253 Bachelor Graduates of Distance Learning.

This is the first training course of Distance Learning of TVU and most of the learners have been working at departments and enterprises in Tra Vinh Province as well as in the neighboring areas having the need to upgrade their qualification.

In his speech at the Ceremony, Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh emphasized that TVU has been developing the Distance Learning form with different majors from pre-school education university level to Master level but only granted the degrees to those who have completed the course and qualified as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam. This training form aims at removing the gaps of remote areas and bringing education to the community. Also, he hopes that the Graduates will apply the knowledge studied from this program into their present jobs effectively. Concurrently, he said that TVU always appreciates the contribution opinions of learners about the training program for its improvement of training to meet the requirements of the community.

The University of Greenwich assists in postgraduate study leading to a research degree through the award of scholarships and studentships.
These scholarships provide a financial stipend for three years (subject to satisfactory progress) at an amount equal to that paid by Research Councils UK. Also, tuition fees will be waived up to a maximum amount equivalent to the university’s home/EU tuitions fee for MPhil and PhD students.

On June 10th, 2012, the Delegation of Phu Yen University (PYU) led by Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang- Vice Rector of PYU paid a visit to Tra Vinh University (TVU). Mr. Vo Hoang Khai- Vice Rector of TVU along with leaders of related departments warmly welcomed the delegation of PYU.

At the reception, the participants of two universities exchanged information on some working fields such as administration organization, student management, teaching equipment management, local network operation and the co-op model.

On this visit, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang said that PYU is also a local university and developed from a college so she expressed the goodwill to be shared some experience from TVU in different areas, especially the cooperative training program with enterprises.

 

On behalf of TVU Rector Board, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai thanked the visit of the PYU Delegation to TVU and hoped that this visit would be a bridge for collaboration between the two universities in the coming time.

After the reception, the delegation of PYU was guided to visit some units of TVU with the hope of learning some more experiences.

Invited by the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) and Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, Rector of Tra Vinh University (TVU) and President of Vietnam Association of Community Colleges (VACC), attended 2012 World Congress in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from May 26 to May 29, 2012. This was the seventh WFCP World Congress with the theme “Driving the Global Economy” stimulating dialogue on the profound influence of education on societies, economies and urban and rural communities. Over 1,200 institutional leaders, senior government officials, international partners, faculty and students gathered in Halifax. The ACCC Annual Conference was integrated into the WFCP event.

Before attending the Opening Ceremony of 2012 World Congress, Dr. Khanh had precious opportunities to meet with TVU and VACC current as well as potential partners to discuss more about the possibilities for both enhancing the existing international collaborations and establishing the new ones with them.


Meeting with Prof. Dr. Truong Vo-Van, President of Canada-Vietnam Education Network and Chair of the Department of Physics of Concordia University, Dr. Khanh extended his thanks to Dr. Truong for his considerable supports to TVU in particular and to Vietnamese Education in general so far.

Having met with Mr. Gleen Blackwood, Vice-President Memorial University (Marine Institute), Dr. Khanh discussed the possibilities for carrying out joint training programs between TVU and The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI).

In his efforts to seek new partners, Dr. Khanh met with leaders of Saint Mary’s University and Mount Saint Vincent University. They got fruitful meetings promising many exciting possible collaborations that can be formed between TVU and these two institutions in the very near future.

As the President of VACC, Dr. Khanh signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Cégep André-Laurendeau regarding the 2-stage training program in Logistics. Besides, Dr. Khanh signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Cégep Marie-Victorin regarding the internship and voluntary programs, research collaborations, faculty exchange, and linkage training programs.

2012 World Congress ended successfully as planned, and we hope that both TVU and VACC will have better opportunities to implement more mutually beneficial collaboration activities with international partners after Dr. Khanh’s trip to Canada.

On May 27th, 2012, Center of International Cooperation in Education and Training (CiCet) of Tra Vinh University (TVU) coordinated with Center of Continuing Education District 9, Ho Chi Minh City to hold a workshop to consulate on studying abroad program in Vancouver Island University (VIU) at Construction Technical College No2. At the workshop, Dr. Graham Pike- Dean of International Education, VIU directly introduced the details of the cooperative program, BBA, between VIU and TVU, and he also talked about the modern education system of Canada as well as the people and life in Canada.

The workshop attracted the attention of teachers, parents and students in Ho Chi Minh City. Many questions related to the program as well as necessary procedures, policies supporting students during their studying in Canada, job opportunities after graduating, etc were all answered enthusiastically and specifically by Dr. Graham Pike.

The workshop ended successfully and brought opportunities to study abroad in Canada for students in Ho Chi Minh City as well as in neighboring regions.
