From November 27th to November 30th, TVU instructors and students participated in the International Collegiate Programming Contest, held at HaUI, Vietnam.

This year the OLP21 is organized at HaUI, Hanoi, in combination with ACM/ICPC. This is the contest with the largest number of competitors, with 800 candidates from 71 colleges and universities in Vietnam, divided into 128 teams, in which 18 international teams from China, Hongkong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, etc…   


This year TVU team participated in this contest with 03 students and Nguyen Van Phuong, the student of Informatics Technology won the consolation prize.

Partnership Conference on Training was taken place at TVU in the morning on December 1st, 2012 with more than 40 Southern institutional representatives’ participation. Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, Rector of TVU presided at the conference.

To meet local areas’ qualified human resource needs forcultural, economic and social development, TVU and its institutional partners have loyally co-operated on training with multi disciplines, levels and leaning modes for five years. The conference was to assess the co-operation process and collect precious ideas and great suggestions for training affairs development. At the conference, Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, President of Resource Development Institute, TVU reviewed establishment and development of the university, partnership status on training between TVU and the institutions as well as TVU achievements, challenges and appropriate solutions for the training activities.    

On behalf of TVU Rector Board, Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh expressed his gratitude to the participants for their wonderful contributory discussions and proposals in order to offer quality education and great studying conditions to local learners and community.

Soft skills training for TVU students


TVU Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Student Affairs Office and Spacesoft Company held the short training course on soft skills to over 200 students in Hall 1 in the morning on December 1st, 2012. Mr. Pham Hong Tai, Director of Spacesoft Company was the trainer.

           The training course equipped students with necessary skills including job interviewand communication skills in the purpose of developing human resource in Tra Vinh province as well as helping them be more active and confident to approach great job opportunities after graduation.

         After studying Vietnamese language at Faculty of Southern Khmer Art, Culturology and Linguistics for one year, YENG LEAP HENG, an overseas Cambodian student is eligible to start his undergraduate program in Construction Engineering Technology.

         TVU Rector Board had the meeting with related departments and assigned this student to Faculty of Engineering and Technology in the morning on November 27, 2012.

As Dr. Phoeurng Sackona’s invitation, the Secretary of State, Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MOEYS), the leadership delegation of TVP and TVU led by Mr. Thach Hel, Permanent Deputy Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Communist Party Committee visited and worked with MOEYS and Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) from November 22 to November 26, 2012.

On this occasion, the delegation paid courtesy visit to Embassy of Vietnam in Cambodia. H.E Mr. Ngo Anh Dung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary expressed his pleasure to welcome the delegation and affirmed the Embassy would offer convenient conditions for co-operation activities between TVP, TVU and Cambodian partners. At the meeting with the Ministry, Mr. Thach Hel highly evaluated effectiveness of co-operation activities between TVU and ITC since 2010 and he emphasized TVP leaders always provide good conditions for training and scientific research co-operation between TVU and Cambodian universities. Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Rector of TVU presented important issues relating to the co-operative developmental orientation which highly requires the Ministry’s support.


Dr. Phoeurng Sackona also expressed her pleasure to welcome the        delegation and promised to support for the academic co-operation to tighten the friendship between the two countries.

         At the meeting between TVU and ITC, Dr. Om Romny, Director General of ITC and Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Rector of TVU discussed related issues to the signed MoU’s appendix. Dr. Om Romny strongly agreed for further cooperation proposals from TVU and this appendix will be signed by the two institutions in near future.

By the way, the delegation visited Tra Vinh instructors and students who are learning in Phnom Penh and encouraged them to try their best in studying for their contribution to TVP after graduation. On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Thach Hel awarded 10 million VND to the students. Closing the meetings, the delegation visited Angkor temples in Siem Reap province.

The visit promised co-operation opportunities between TVP, TVU and Cambodian partners.

Cultural and art activities were taken place in the evening on November 16th, 2012, at campus 1 held by TVU Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to welcome TVU freshmen 2012-2013. The competitions attracted 93 branches of TVU Communist Youth Union and Student Association with more than 132 performances which praised for the country, Uncle Ho, teachers and students. The Organization Board would select the most excellent performances for the final competition on November 17th, 2012. And football contest has taken place since November 10th with 16 teams. After their exciting competition, the most excellent teams and performances would be awarded.  

These activities help students learn more about our culture and it is a great opportunity for them to relax. Besides, the activities help the Organization Board to select the best individuals for further competitions between TVU and other institutions.

The annual CamTESOL conference plays an important role in highlighting research into the teaching of the English language in the region and around the world.  Many research-based papers, after being presented at CamTESOL, are submitted for consideration for publication in Language Education in Asia (LEiA).  LEiA is a peer-reviewed online journal, inspired by the annual CamTESOL conference series.

As in previous years, IDP Education is again coordinating sponsorship to create some research grants for delegates to the 2013 conference. The grants are to support delegates who wish to pursue research that will be written up and presented at the 2014 conference and then submitted for consideration for publication in LEiA.  The next round of grants will be made available to nationals of the following countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia.


  • Researchers must be nationals of the following countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines or Indonesia.
  • Researchers must reside in the country of their respective nationality.
  • Researchers should not previously have received a CamTESOL grant.
  • Researchers must be registered for and attend CamTESOL 2013 on both days, Saturday and Sunday.
  • A maximum of two researchers may submit a joint proposal; in this case the grant of US$500 is shared.

Details of Grant

The purpose of the grants is to support research that will be conducted during 2013.  The research and its outcomes are for presentation at the 10th Annual CamTESOL Conference to be held in Phnom Penh in February 2014.


  • Applicants will be invited to participate in a Regional ELT Research Forum conducted on Friday morning, February 22nd, prior to the 2013 CamTESOL conference. For updates on this forum please visit the conference website
  • Informal updates on progress may be requested by an officially appointed contact person at regular intervals throughout the grant period.
  • Research will be conducted in 2013 and written up as a paper to be delivered at CamTESOL 2014.
  • Papers should be submitted for consideration for publication in Language Education in Asia (LEiA)
  • IDP Education reserves the right to cancel the grant at any time if part of the research paper is found to be plagiarised.
  • Grant money cannot be used to cover transportation, or paying for recipients’ own working hours.
  • The proposal should NOT be based on any existing publication.
  • Money will be paid in two installments: on granting of the proposal (US$150) and on submission of a written paper before CamTESOL 2014 (US$350).
  • Conference registration to CamTESOL 2014 will be waived.
  • Where possible, the chosen researchers will be supported in their research by a highly qualified and experienced international researcher who has offered to assist in a mentoring capacity.

Grant Policy

Criteria for Judging Proposals

The competitiveness of the research proposals will be judged by a specialist panel on the basis of the following criteria:


  1. 1.The relevance of the proposed research to the improvement of teaching English in the context of developing countries;
  2. 2.The potential contribution of the proposed research to the existing literature on the teaching of the English language;
  3. 3.The clarity and conciseness of the proposal;
  4. 4.The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methodology;
  5. 5.The relevant background, training, and experience of the applicant(s).

Some Suggested Topics

Some suggested research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Effects of globalisation on the teaching of English in the respective countries.
  • Issues specific to teaching English in the context of the respective countries.
  • Issues regarding English teacher training in the respective countries.
  • Teaching academic English in respective contexts.
  • Learning styles of English language students in the respective countries.
  • Overcoming typical problems in ELT classrooms in respective countries.

        On October 29 and 30, 2012, TVU held the pre-employment testing. Participating the testing, there were Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Rector of TVU, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet Mai, Director of Human Resource Administration and representatives of the Testing Council and 63 applicants.

The applicants were tested about their professional knowledge, informatics and English language knowledge in accordance with their intended jobs and the council had opportunity to witness the applicants’ degrees and certificates.

The applicants expected to work and give long term contribution to TVU for Tra Vinh province’s educational development. After this testing, the excellent applicants would be interviewed by TVU recruitment council.
