Fulbright U.S. – ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program 2013
 
HANOI, November 5, 2012 - Mission Vietnam seeks outstanding candidates to become Fulbrighters by participating in the 2013 Fulbright U.S. – ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program.  We seek university faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, and professional staff of think tanks and other organizations in Vietnam to travel to the U.S. for scholarly and professional research for 3-4months on issues relevant to ASEAN and its relationship to the United States.
 
We seek talented Vietnamese citizens in the fields of Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Food Technology, Geography, Geology, Information Sciences, Journalism, Law, Life Science, Management Information Systems, Museum Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Public/Global Health, Religious Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Statistics, and TEFL & Applied Linguistics to participate in the program, marking 35 years of partnership between ASEAN and the United States.  The deadline for applying is November 16, 2012.
 
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton supports this initiative to deepen people-to-people engagement and strengthen education ties better between the U.S. and ASEAN countries. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. The Fulbright Program in Vietnam, Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy Hanoi will coordinate to nominate up to two candidates from Vietnam. 
 
In the 2013, Fulbright U.S. - ASEAN visiting scholars may apply to lecture and conduct research in fields that will support ASEAN initiatives including but not limited to the ones listed above.
Eligibility requirements
Ø  Hold a single Vietnamese citizenship
Ø  University faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, and professional staff of think tanks and other NGOs in Vietnam
Ø  Proficiency in English
Ø  Residing in Vietnam
A complete application includes:
  1. An online application
  2. Project statement (three to five pages)
  3. Bibliography
  4. Curriculum vitae (up to six pages)
  5. Letters of recommendation (three required)
 
Fulbright U.S - ASEAN Visiting Scholar awards will provide:
Ø  A monthly stipend for grantees, between US $2,500 and $2,900/month, depending on U.S. host city.
Ø  A direct-flight, round-trip economy-class air ticket.
Ø  A $900 Professional and Settling-in allowance.
Ø  Qualifying university lab and research fees up to $3,000, as necessary
Ø  No dependent support will be available.

This visit was to explore TVU’s training activities to co-ordinate with propaganda about environmental education to students.


At the meeting, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai expressed his warmest welcome to the delegation. TVU Rector Board hoped that BL GIZ would deliver surveys to offer propaganda activities including holding workshops about environmental education to TVU students to enhance their awareness in environmental preservation to make TVU green, clean and beautiful to approach ASEAN  University Network (AUN) criteria.

In the morning on October 25, 2012, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai, Vice Rector of TVU and representatives of International Collaboration and Project Promotion Office, Center of International Cooperation in Education and Training, and Department of Foreign Languages had a meeting to summarize and acknowledge Mr. Maurice Gallant's working results and contribution after his five-week work at TVU.

At the meeting, Mr. Maurice Gallant expressed his pleasure and gratitude to TVU Rector Board and officials for offering him great working conditions.  He stated he has learned many interesting things including Tra Vinh culture and people, and had opportunities to participate in research activities as well as instruct English language to students.

After this meeting, his destination is Battambang province, Cambodia.

On behalf of TVU Rector Board, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai expressed his sincere thanks to him for his great contribution. Mr. Vo Hoang Khai hoped he would have a good journey and deliver useful activities to community.

In the morning on October 24th, 2012, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai, Vice Rector of TVU welcomed and worked with Ms. Lisa Huynh and Ms. Ashlee Waymann, interns of MI. There were representatives of Gender and Community Department (GCD), Center of International Cooperation in Education and Training (Cicet) and International Collaboration and Project Promotion Office.

The two interns have received warmest welcome from TVU Rector Board and officials. They had opportunity to explore the university's training and co-operation activities. Their internship program lasts for five months, from October 23rd, 2012 to March 23rd, 2013. Ms. Lisa Huynh and Ms. Ashlee Waymann are working at GCD as an officer on gender and at Cicet as a training assistant on gender, economics and business respectively.

 

Closing the meeting, Mr. Vo Hoang Khai sent his wishes to the two interns for beginning to undertake their responsibilities at TVU. He hoped these interns, along with TVU officials will help the university develop the subjects of gender and gender equality.

In the morning on October 21st, 2012, Faculty of Southern Khmer Art, Culturology and Linguistics, TVU delivered a discussion to Cambodian students at Hall 1. There were Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue, Dean of the faculty; Ms. Ly Thi Tuyet, a specialized medical doctor, Vice Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy; Mr. Tran Loi, Head of Dormitory Management Board and representatives of International Collaboration and Project Promotion Office, Finance and Planning Office and over 100 Cambodian students and their parents.

Implementing training quota in 2012 and expanding co-operation relations with Cambodian institutions, so far, TVU has received 83 applications and there were 69 admitted applications in areas of Nursing, Medical Tests, English Linguistics, Business Administration, Finance- Banking, Technology of Information, Construction, Electricity- Electronics and Chemical.

At the discussion, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue delivered an overall introduction about TVU, Vietnamese culture, visa procedures, learning opportunities, regulations and policies to the students and their parents.

In this event, the students and their parents expressed their pleasure in learning at TVU and receiving hospitality and warmest welcome from TVU's representatives. Besides, they made many questions about areas of study at the university, especially in training programs of Medical Doctor, Nursing and Medical Tests.

On October 19th and 20th, 2012, 53 TVU female contestants competed with their "ao dai" and office attire performance together  with their intellectual responses. The three contestants including Ho Thi Thuy Hang, Huynh Thi Ngoc Ngoan and Nguyen Thuy Thuy performed excellently and became the winners in the contest.

           After the vibrant competition, Board of Examiners decided to select 10 best contestants to perform their intellectual responses in the final round. The subjects in this round involved knowledge and experience about cultural, social issues and women's style in modern life.

            After the final round of competition, the Board of Examiners selected three best contestants. The first, second and third prize were awarded to Ho Thi Thuy Hang, Office of Communist Youth Union and Student Association; Huynh Thi Ngoc Ngoan and Nguyen Thuy Thuy, Teacher Education Practice School respectively. There were five consolation prizes. Besides, the Organization Board awarded extra prizes such as the most beautiful "ao dai", the nicest office attire, the most intellectual response, the oldest contestant, the contestant with the most votes by audiences and the loveliest countenance.

The first contest “Office Beauty”, 2012 was very useful for TVU female officials on the occasion of Vietnamese Women's Day. This opportunity helped them to get experience in performing their aptitude, activeness, creativity, and inside and outside beauty in front of crowds as well as representing great qualities of Vietnamese women.

            At the opening ceremony on October 19th, Organization Board honorably welcomed Ms. Nguyen Thi Cuc, Vice-Chairwoman of Tra Vinh Provincial Labor Federation; Mr. Tran Hoan Kim, TVU Advisory Committee and Former Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee; Ms. Thach Thi Dan, Vice Rector of TVU; Mr. Nguyen Chinh, Deputy Secretary of TVU Communist Party Committee, Chairman of TVU Labor Union. There were 53 female contestants to be TVU staff and instructors and thousands of fans.

On October 10 & 11, 2012, Ms. Ute Fiedler, International Business Development Consultant of Mount Saint Vincent University, Canada (MSVU) visited Tra Vinh University (TVU). Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, Rector of TVU, together with all the members of the Rector Board and Heads of related Departments welcomed her with open arms. This is her first time to Vietnam. Ms. Fiedler came to Tra Vinh City on October 10 and got a trip round TVU to see how TVU is growing. On October 11, Ms. Fiedler met with TVU representatives to discuss about the possibility of developing the collaboration activities between the two institutions.

 

Dr. Khanh said that it was a great pleasure for him as well as for all TVU staff and faculty members to meet with Ms. Fiedler and hoped she had a fruitful business trip to TVU. Ms. Fiedler thanked Dr. Khanh and TVU colleagues for their kind hospitality and sent the best regards from the President and Vice President of MSVU to Dr. Khanh and TVU Rector Board.

 

After a 3-hour discussion, Dr. Khanh and Ms. Fiedler signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the Articulation Agreement on Transfer Credit between TVU and MSVU. The signing ceremony was honorably witnessed by Mrs. Son Thi Anh Hong, Vice Chairwoman of the People’s Committee of Tra Vinh Province, all the Rector Board members, and Department Heads of TVU.

Both TVU and MSVU strongly believe that the Memorandum of Understanding and the Articulation Agreement on Transfer Credit will serve as a very good base for further collaboration activities between the two universities in the near future.

        On October 12th, 2012, the Opening Ceremony 2012-2013 was taken place at the yard of Faculty of Agriculture and Aquaculture, Campus 1, TVU. Participating the ceremony, there were Mr. Duong Hoang Nghia, Deputy Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Communist Party Committee and Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Council; Ms. Son Thi Anh Hong, Standing Commissioner of Tra Vinh Provincial Communist Party Committee and Vice- Chairwoman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee; representatives of provincial departments, enterprises, veteran revolutionaries, and foreign professors, instructors and volunteers who are co-operating and working at TVU. On the side of TVU, there were Mr. Tran Hoan Kim, Former Deputy Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Communist Party Committee and Former Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee, Chairman of TVU Advisory Council; Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, a commissioner of Tra Vinh Provincial Communist Party Committee, Secretary of TVU Communist Party Committee, Rector of TVU and TVU instructors, staff and students.

 With the exciting atmosphere to welcome a new school year, Mr. Le Van Don, Vice Rector of TVU read the Congratulation Letter of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee. Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh delivered his opening speech and the report for 2011-2012 and orientation for 2012- 2013. Closing the year, TVU has made efforts to overcome difficulties and challenges. After 3 years for applying credit based system, training quality is improved. At the present, TVU offers 24 areas of study in college level, 23 areas of study in university level and 01 area of study for master level. In the year 2011-2012, there were 3,619 graduates, reached over 80%. This year, there are 24,000 TVU students including full time, part- time, articulation and distance learning forms. TVU continues to implement quality management ISO: 9001- 2008 and strengthen relations with enterprises in Co-op model, expand international collaboration, develop staff's capacity, attract intellectuals, promote scientific research, production and services. TVU's main mission is to bring learning opportunities and ensure training quality to community.

 

At the ceremony, the best new student was awarded. Sponsors offered scholarships to poor and studious students. The representatives of TVU instructors and students delivered their emotional speech with their maturation in learning and working process at TVU.

 

Ms. Son Thi Anh Hong, the representative of Tra Vinh Provincial leaders, acknowledged and praised for TVU achievements and she mentioned that TVU should promote to offer political and ideological education to TVU instructors, staff and students, enhance training quality and competitiveness and make good images for TVU.
