(TVU) – On October 29, Tra Vinh University coordinated with the Center for Environment and Community Resource Development under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations to organize the debate tournament on “2023’s Climate change adaptation in Tra Vinh” for high school students in the province.
At the tournament, there was the attendance of Mrs. Le Thi Van Hue, Deputy Director of the Center for Environment and Community Resource Development; Dr. Thach Thi Dan, Vice-Rector of Tra Vinh University; Leader of the Youth Union – Student Association of Tra Vinh University; leaders of multiple high schools, contestants and students.
Dr. Thach Thi Dan, Vice-Rector of Tra Vinh University, said: “The tournament spreads and arouses the awareness and responsibility of the young generation towards environmental and social issues, thereby trying their best to study, research, and create effective solutions to respond to climate change, creating a healthy and friendly living environment for the sustainable development of society and people.”
Through the training round, 4 teams with 20 candidates from 4 high schools in Tra Vinh province, including Hoa Loi High School (Chau Thanh), Pham Thai Buong High School, Tra Vinh Pedagogical Practice School and High School for Ethnic Minority Boarding in Tra Vinh province, participated in direct debates.
In the semi-finals, the teams competed with the topic “Local experience and knowledge help communities in the Mekong Delta adapt most effectively to drought and salinity; Protecting and restoring mangrove forests are the most effective solution for people in the Mekong Delta to cope with climate change and sea level rise.”
The competing teams were divided into pairs according to the form of direct-elimination debate. At the end of the semi-finals, the jury selected 2 teams with the highest achievements to participate in a direct debate competition to compete for First and Second prizes in the final round with the topic: “Youth is the core force in adaptation to climate change.”
At the end of the competition, the Organizing Committee awarded the first prize to the team of Tra Vinh Pedagogical Practice School, the second prize to the team of Tra Vinh Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School, and two third prizes to 2 teams of Hoa Loi High School and Pham Thai Buong High School.
