Free artificial lens replacement surgery for poor patients in Vinh Long province

TVU – On July 24, Tra Vinh University coordinated with the Eye Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City and V.Rohto Vietnam Company to organize a free artificial lens replacement surgery program for patients in difficult circumstances in Vinh Long province. The program took place at Tra Vinh University Hospital with the desire to bring light and restore eyesight to patients with cataracts, especially the elderly and patients in difficult circumstances.

The program was attended by sponsors, Mr. Nguyen Tuong Duy, Community Eye Care Project Manager, V.Rohto Vietnam Company, and Dr. Tran Huy Hoang, Deputy Head of Healthcare Activity Direction Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital.

On the side of Tra Vinh University, there was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diep Thanh Tung, Vice Rector of Tra Vinh University; Dr. Tran Ngoc Sau, Deputy Director of Tra Vinh University Hospital; MSc. Phung Thi Phuong Khanh, Director of the Community Service Center.

Speaking at the program, Dr. Tran Ngoc Sau emphasized the importance of coordinated activities to bring high-quality medical services closer to the community, especially to those in difficult circumstances. He thanked the support from sponsors, V.Rohto Company, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, and Tra Vinh University Hospital for joining hands to take care of community health.

Following the program was the bandage removal ceremony for the first eight patients after surgery, including four male and four female patients, who showed joy and emotion when their eyesight was restored.

A patient over 50 years old, living in a nursing home, shared emotionally, “For many years, my eyes have not seen anything, I have difficulty walking, but I have not had the conditions for treatment. Today, with the dedicated help of the doctors, I feel like I have seen the light of life again.”

Dr. Tran Huy Hoang, Deputy Head of Healthcare Activity Direction Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, said that he will always be ready to provide professional support, train human resources, and expand the scale of cooperation with the school to bring better treatment opportunities to the people and the community.

In 2025, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital and Tra Vinh University Hospital coordinated to organize two humanitarian surgeries for 65 patients to replace artificial lenses for free, with a total funding of more than 250 million VND supported by V.Rohto Vietnam Company. The program has brought the opportunity to restore eyesight to patients in difficult circumstances. Not only performing precise and effective surgeries, the team of specialized doctors from Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital also demonstrated dedication, thoughtfulness, and dedication following the spirit of medical ethics – dedication to the community.

The program not only helps restore light to patients but also contributes to raising public awareness of cataracts, the role of regular eye examinations, and the importance of comprehensive vision care.
