Background<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam has been affected by global climate change. While the effect of climate change is global, its impact is unevenly distributed due to existing gender and social inequalities in society. For example, ethnic minority farmers in the coastal area depend heavily on natural resources, experiencing greater impacts of climate change. However, their voices are rarely reflected in climate adaptation policies and agricultural technology development.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

CGIAR Asian Mega-Deltas Initiative prioritizes co-production of knowledge and co-design of agricultural innovations based on varied needs and interests. In particular, the initiative seeks to incorporate voices of young people, women farmers and ethnic minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this workshop, we invite young ethnic minority students at the Agriculture and Aquaculture School of Tra Vinh University to join in this co-learning opportunity and share their ideas and opinions from the perspectives of their gender, ethnicity and generation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Objectives<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Increase the awareness of climate crisis and its impact on agriculture and aquaculture in the Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam<\/span><\/p>\n

Understand the process of marginalization and exclusion by gender and ethnicity in climate policy and climate adaptation<\/span><\/p>\n

Raise youth voices on climate crisis<\/span><\/p>\n

Exchange ideas on climate adaptation and innovation in agriculture and aquaculture<\/span><\/p>\n

Around 30 Khmer students in Agriculture and aquaculture School, Tra Vinh University<\/span><\/p>\n

Gender balance: women students should be around 50% or higher<\/span><\/p>\n

CGIAR research aims to reduce rural poverty, increase food security, improve human health and nutrition, and sustainable management of natural resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Agriculture and Aquaculture School (Tra Vinh University),<\/span>\u00a0is a unit which performs the function of organizing branches in the fields of agriculture and fisheries, researching and transferring science and technology, developing science and technology applications to serve the people. The school regularly organises the different training programs on knowledge and new farming techniques for people in order to be suitable to the situation in the context of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Nozomi Kawarazuka<\/span>, is social science at the International Potato Center, CGIAR. She has been living in Hanoi for 7 years. Her research focus on understanding gender relations and social diversities in climate adaptation and agricultural technology adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Trinh Ngoc Ai,<\/span>\u00a0is currently the Vice Dean of the School of Agriculture and Aquaculture, Tra Vinh University. Dr. Ai is the daughter of Tra Vinh land, home to more than 300,000 Khmer population, accounting for nearly 32% of the province\u2019s population. Tra Vinh is still underdeveloped compared to other provinces in the region. Economic restructuring, investment structure is still slow; agricultural production is unsustainably developed; development of aquaculture products has not been commensurate with potentials and strengths; industry develops slowly and is scattered; domestic revenue has not met the requirement of recurrent expenditure; infrastructure is still weak; income and living standards of a part of the population are still low, especially in rural areas. In agriculture, scientific and technical advances have not been invested much. Therefore, after completing the PhD program from Korea, Dr. Ai wishes to have the opportunity to help and contribute some of her knowledge in Vietnam in general and Tra Vinh in particular. Dr. Ai is interest some issues, including plant varieties, new farming techniques in agriculture adapted to climate change and suitable solutions for the agricultural industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Thach Thi Chal Thi (Sok Farm),\u00a0<\/span>is a Khmer daughter in Tra Vinh, founder of the \u201ccoconut nectar<\/span>\u201d<\/span>, a business model in Tieu Can. The idea of winning the first prize of the Mekong Delta Startup Contest in 2019, receiving the Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister, the 16th Luong Dinh Cua Award in 2021, the ASEAN Business Award in 2021, and many other awards and certificates of merit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Ly Quoc Dang<\/span>, is currently a researcher at the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute, Can Tho University. At CGIAR, Dr. Dang is now serving as a national consultant for research on gender and climate change in the Mekong Delta. Dr. Dang is a son of Khmer Community, he was born and raising in a poor farming family from remote rural area in Thanh Tri District, Soc Trang province.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Bui Thi Quynh Trang<\/span>, is working at CGIAR in Hanoi office. Ms. Trang is in focusing of gender, agriculture, climate change in the Northwest region of Vietnam. Ms. Trang participates in this workshop as an interpreter for Dr. Nozomi.<\/span><\/p>\n
