“Bringing quality learning opportunities to community”

Tra Vinh University (TVU) was formed and developed from Tra Vinh Community College. After successfully implementing the 5-year Vietnam-Canada Community College Project co-sponsored by the Canadian and Vietnamese governments, along with the urgent need for educational and training development in the province as well as the demand for human resources to implement economic, cultural and social development strategies in the Mekong Delta region and across the country, Tra Vinh University is officially established according to Decision 141/QD/2006-TTg dated 19/6/2006 by the Prime Minister, becoming one of the public universities in Vietnam’s higher education system.

TVU, formerly Tra Vinh Community College, was formed in 2001 under the Vietnam and Canada Community College Project. The project was funded and supported technologies by the Department of International Development, Canada, the Canada Association of Community Colleges (ACCC), some institutes in Canada such as Saskatchewan Institute of Science and Applied Technology (SIAT), Marine Institute (MI), Québec Institute of Technology of Agriculture (ITA), and Malaspina University and College, and Vietnam Government. Vietnam and Canada Community College Project proved that Canada’s community college model has been able to effectively implement the Vietnam educational system.

The university operates under a model of multi-disciplinary, multi-modal training and inter-training at all levels, aiming to train and provide society with highly skilled human resources, applied research, technology transfer and social services. Tra Vinh University always strives to “Bring quality learning opportunities to community” to flexibly meet the lifelong learning needs of learners and create strong links with enterprises and recruitment units to ensure that skill-oriented training is in line with social needs through the provision of training programs from college, undergraduate, and graduate levels to people at all ages with special attention given to women, ethnic minorities and communities with special needs. Tra Vinh University strives to become a well-regarded university in the professional education system in Vietnam and internationally.

According to the 2023 Webometrics rankings, Tra Vinh University was ranked 216th in the Southwest region, and 26th in Vietnam. Tra Vinh University retains the position of the TOP 200 most sustainable development universities in the world. TVU has effectively adopted the quality management system to meet ISO 9001-2000 standards since 2006, and up to now it has gone through the versions of ISO 9001-2008 to ISO 9001-2015. TVU has been accredited according to the new standards of the Ministry of Education and Training and is approaching international accreditation standards such as FIBAA, AUN, and ABET …For many years, Tra Vinh University has continued to enter the Top 100 of WURI Ranking – universities that positively influence to the society. TVU is a member of CDIO and the only international member of Colleges and Institutes Canada.

Training Programs

Tra Vinh University is a PUBLIC university in the Mekong Delta, authorized by the Ministry of Education and Training to RECRUIT NATIONWIDE for 10 doctoral programs, 24 master’s programs, 50 undergraduate programs, and 01 college program, focusing on fields such as Agriculture – Fisheries, Engineering & Technology, Medicine – Pharmacy, Foreign Languages, Khmer Language – Culture – Arts in the South, Economics – Law, Applied Chemistry, Pedagogy, State Management – Office Administration, Political Theory, Basic Sciences, Odonto – Stomatology, and Pre – University.

Organizational Structure, Facilities, and Human Resources

Tra Vinh University established 03 schools to carry out training functions, including College of Economics, Law (CEL), College of Medicine and Pharmacy (CMP), and College of Southern Khmer Language – Culture – Arts and Humanities (CLASKA), formed by merging faculties with related fields. The School of Economics and Law was established based on the Faculty of Economics, Law and the Faculty of State Management, Office Administration, which consists of the following faculties: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Administration. The School of Medicine and Pharmacy has the following faculties: Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Faculty of Odonto – Stomatology. The School of Southern Khmer Language – Culture – Arts Humanity has the following faculties and centers: Faculty of Khmer Language – Culture – Arts in the South, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Pedagogy, Faculty of Tourism, Restaurant and Hotel Management, Center for Western Culture, and Center for the Vietnamese Language. 

The university currently has 18 academic faculties: Agriculture – Aquaculture, Engineering and Technology, Medicine – Pharmacy, Odonto-Stomatology, Economics, Law, Management, Logistics, Foreign Languages,  Applied Chemistry, Basic Sciences, Pedagogy, Southern Khmer Language – Culture and Arts, Chinese Language, Tourism – Restaurant – Hotel Management, Political Theory, Physical Education, and Pre-University.

The university has 18 functional offices and departments, 02 councils, 13 centers, and other affiliated units such as the Resource Development Institute, International Training Institute, Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Pedagogical Practice School, Scientific Journal, Dormitories (3500 beds), Tra Vinh University Hospital, and Tra Vinh Provincial Business Incubator. The university has 02 main campuses, with the main campus located at 126 Nguyen Thien Thanh Street, Ward 5, Tra Vinh City.

With a total area of nearly 53 hectares, Tra Vinh University comprises various buildings: blocks of rooms, faculties, institutes, centers, Pedagogical Practice School, Dormitories, Library, Lecture Halls, Practice and Experiment Areas, classrooms, etc. The central and local authorities have approved investment projects for construction, some of which have been completed and officially put into use, along with the purchase of synchronized equipment, while other projects are being expedited. In general, the facilities and equipment meet the university’s training requirements.

Since 2006, 369 staff and employees have participated in training activities. The team has grown to over 1400 people. With a spirit of unity, enthusiasm, and dynamism, the faculty members engage in teaching, scientific research, and continuous learning to enhance their qualifications at domestic and international training institutions. Currently, the university meets the Ministry of Education and Training’s requirements for training capacity.

Scientific research  

The university particularly emphasizes scientific research. The university has implemented more than 180 research topics in various research fields. Among them, some applied topics have been transferred into practical science and technology, typically such as the VietGap rice production model, sap coconut embryo culture model, safe vegetable production model, self-governing student cucumber growing model, mushroom cultivation model, seawater crab farming model in Duyen Hai…, contributing to specific economic efficiency in production in the province. Hundreds of scientific articles by lecturers are published in domestic and international journals. Since 2011, the university has been licensed by the Ministry of Information and Communications to publish a scientific journal with ISSN:1859-4816. The university’s scientific journal has been recognized by the Council for Professor Title as one of the scientific journals that count for works in Cultural Studies and Literature.

The university focuses on student experiential activities for the community, “Nurturing student startup ideas,” strongly developing “Space for Invention among students and lecturers,” “Student Cooperative” and “Student Farmer Association,” along with many extracurricular activities from models of “Student Clubs” for the community. The university also expands the startup fund and scientific research fund to help students and lecturers confidently develop research ideas to create applied products serving the community, such as successfully raising disease-free shrimp broodstock, coconut embryo culture, cultivating cordyceps, creating drought and salt-tolerant rice varieties, electric motorcycles, 3D printers… Additionally, the university implements many national and ministerial-level research projects such as The project of the Ministry of Education and Training ‘Compiling Vietnamese-Khmer and Khmer-Vietnamese Dictionary’ (2014-2015), the project of the Ministry of Education and Training ‘Preserving and Promoting the Values of Khmer Folk Music Culture in the Mekong Delta’ (2018-2019), the State-level project ‘Culture in Sustainable Development of the Southwestern Region’ (2019-2020). Mainly, TVU offers many good policies towards learners, such as tuition fee exemption and reduction, scholarships encouraging female students to study technical and technological majors, support student startup loans…, which have supported students in studying, researching, and confidently developing ideas and research to create applied products serving the community.

International Collaboration  

TVU is active in establishing cooperative relationships with nearly 90 partners from 11 countries, including the United States of America, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, China, Japan, The Philippines, Singapore, Israel, Cambodia, and Hungary in specific areas such as joint training; research, organizing scientific forums and seminars; lecturers and students exchange; receiving volunteers, and funding projects from international education organizations.

TVU is promoting several projects related to short-term and long-term scholarships for lecturers and students; exchanges of lecturers and students, including receiving volunteers and international experts; green university projects; developing Student research groups, including the IEEE Student Chapter at Tra Vinh University and developing a maker space for students and lecturers.

Tra Vinh University continues to maintain and promote its strengths and, at the same time, continuously invests in areas including providing more facilities and equipment, enhancing the quality of teaching staff and management capability, updating training programs, stabilizing political thinking, ensuring material and spiritual life for lecturers, and create creative and dynamic learning and working environment.
