(TVU) – On June 30, 2022, the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam and Tra Vinh University signed a sponsorship agreement on the project “Promoting the application of alternating wet and dry irrigation technology in rice cultivation of the Mekong Delta” to improve the climate change adaptation capacity of farmers.
Rice production plays an important role in the economy of the Mekong Delta and the whole country. However, in recent years, rice cultivation in most localities in the region is facing several difficulties as a consequence of climate change, scarcity of irrigation water due to drought, and saline intrusion.
The project took place from September 2022 to March 2023 to provide technical assistance to members of rice-specializing cooperatives in Tra Vinh and Can Tho provinces through field training (FFS). The FFS training courses will help farmers realize the benefits of water-saving irrigation practices, thereby promoting the replication of advanced rice farming techniques.
Estimates show that at the end of the project, 120 households (of which at least 30% are women) in Tra Vinh and Can Tho will directly benefit from this project.
