The delegation of Southwestern Direction Board visited Tra Vinh University (TVU)

In the morning on October 5th, 2012, representatives of TVU Advisory Council, TVU Rector Board, Faculty of Linguistics, Southern Khmer Art and Culture and TVU departments warmly welcomed the delegation of Southwestern Direction Board led by Mr. Ha Huu Lien, Director General of Department for Ethnic and Religious Affairs, Southwestern Direction Board to work at TVU. Accompanying the delegation, there were Mr. Thach Muni, Deputy Director General of Department for Ethnic and Religious Affairs; Mr. Bui Ngoc Diep, Higher Deputy Director General of Department of Political System Development; Mr. Pham Van Nhon, Deputy Director General of Social and Cultural Department, Southwestern Direction Board. The visit was to explore training affairs in Khmer areas of study and delivered a discussion section about enrollment status for Southern Khmer Traditional Instrument Performance at TVU.

At the meeting, the delegation had opportunity to discover establishment and development as well as difficulties in enrollment affairs for areas of study in Culture and Traditional Instrument Performance of Faculty of Linguistics, Southern Khmer Art and Culture presented by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue, Dean of the faculty. She also suggested the delegation to support the faculty in implementing its mission in training, research, national cultural character preservation and promotion of Vietnam ethnic minorities in general and Southern Khmer in particular.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue proposed to strengthen open enrollment to officials in Mekong Delta to study areas of linguistics, Southern Khmer Culture in general and Southern Khmer Traditional Instrument Performance in particular. She also suggested the delegation to support TVU in holding internal and external ethnic activities including scientific workshops, cultural events, enrollment advising to students and their parents, have preferential policies for staff and instructors who involve with ethnic affairs and for Khmer intellectuals, petition to higher authorities for encouragement policies such as reduced and exempted school fees and scholarships for Khmer people to study linguistics and Southern Khmer culture.

The delegation highly evaluated TVU instructors’ and staff’s efforts and Tra Vinh Provincial People’s Committee’s great direction in Khmer national cultural character promotion associated with the mission of the project of Ethnic Minority Culture Preservation and Promotion to 2020 approved by Prime Minister. The delegation accepted that TVU’s suggestions were appropriate and these proposals represented long-term developmental strategies. Mr. Ha Huu Lien proposed that TVU needed to promote to popularize the importance of national cultural character preservation and promotion to community and Khmer students. TVU should send official recommendation documents to related departments to co-ordinate to implement training mission in particular areas of study for Khmer people in Southwestern region. The delegation received TVU’s proposals to submit to higher authorities for consideration.

Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, Rector of TVU expressed his gratitude to the delegation for their visit and attention to Khmer people as well as their support to TVU in Southwestern Khmer national cultural character preservation and promotion. Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh received the delegation’s comments in promoting higher authorities’ attention to develop the faculty to become the key faculty in Southwestern region to meet Khmer people’s studying needs and it is a place for Southwestern Khmer national cultural character preservation and promotion.
