The “Scientific and technical research ideas” contest – a useful and practical playground for high school students

(TVU) – On the morning of October 15, Tra Vinh University organized the final round of the first “Scientific and Technical Research Ideas” Contest, 2023, for students from high schools inside and outside Tra Vinh province. The contest attracted 19 ideas and topics from 12 high schools in 4 Mekong Delta provinces to participate.

At the contest, there was the participation of Associate Professor Dr. Diep Thanh Tung – Vice-Rector of Tra Vinh University, Dr. Nguyen Tan Tai –  Head of the Department of Applied Chemistry, teachers of the Department, and students of different high schools.

Associate Professor Dr. Diep Thanh Tung, Vice-Rector of Tra Vinh University, said that the Contest of Scientific and Technical Research Ideas encouraged high school students to research, create, and apply science to life; helped students develop research ideas in chemistry, materials science, and environment; at the same time, facilitated the completion of students’ scientific research ideas and supported them to participate in the National Science Competition.

This year’s contest attracted 12 high schools from 04 Mekong Delta provinces (Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Vinh Long) to participate, including Nguyen Quang Dieu High School for the Gifted; Tam Nong High School; Tram Chim High School; Mai Thanh The High School; Nguyen Khuyen High School; Hung Loi Secondary and High School; Tran Van Bay High School; Tan Thanh Secondary and High School; Huynh Tan Phat High School; Doan Thi Diem High School; Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School; Thanh Binh Secondary & High School.

Dr. Nguyen Tan Tai, Head of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Deputy Head of the Competition’s Organizing Committee, said: “The contest has 19 ideas and topics in the fields of analytical chemistry, chemistry on computer, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry; materials chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, environmental treatment by chemical methods, pollution control, waste management and reuse, water resource management, chemical materials, polymer materials; nanomaterials, composite materials, biomedical materials.”

The contest was held in face-to-face and online forms. The preliminary round took place from August 18 to August 31. The Organizing Committee selected 15 of 19 registered topics for the final round.

In the final round, the Organizing Committee organized an evaluation council directly at Tra Vinh University or online (via Google Meet) for candidates who did not have the opportunity to participate directly at school to select the topic winning the award.

Inspired by using Euphobia Tithymaloides L. to make a hemostatic bandage, contestant Chau Nguyen Hoang Phuc, a student at Huynh Tan Phat High School (Ben Tre), shared: “This is the first time I participated in a science and technology competition in the field of chemistry at Tra Vinh University. During the research process, I learned a lot of useful knowledge. The contest gave me and my friends an opportunity to create practical value from ideas, contributing to improving the value of life.

At the end of the contest, the Organizing Committee awarded 01 First prize, 01 Second prize, 01 Third prize, and 12 Consolation prizes. In particular, the ideas that won first, second, and third prizes were supported by Tra Vinh University with experimental conditions to participate in the Science and Technology competition in the school year 2023 – 2024.

The first prize belonged to the topic “Effects of replacing fermented durian peel powder in the diet on the digestion and weight gain of ducks” by the group of authors Vo Tran Anh Huy and Nguyen Duy Khang, students of Huynh Tan Phat High School (Ben Tre).

The second prize belonged to the topic “Application of hemostatic plaster and hemostatic bandage for capillary wounds using Euphobia Tithymaloides L. leaf extract” by author Nguyen Chau Hoang Phuc, a student of Huynh Tan High School Phat (Ben Tre).

The third prize was awarded to the author group To Tu My and Vo Thi Tuong Van, students of Hung Loi High School (Soc Trang), with the topic “FEW Mask & Kombucha cheese cheese tea.”
