Empowering Primary Teachers: TVU’s Workshop on Constructivist Methods

On June 13, 2025, Tra Vinh University hosted a workshop in the E21.105 auditorium on developing training programs and instructional materials for constructivist teaching methods for primary school teachers in Tra Vinh.

This event is part of an ongoing research project led by Dr. Phan Thi No, Head of the Education Department at Tra Vinh University. It featured over 30 representatives, including leaders and teachers from various primary schools in Tra Vinh: Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang from the Tra Vinh Department of Science and Technology, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ba, Head of the Preschool and Primary Education Department of the Tra Vinh Department of Education and Training, Ms. Phan Thanh Hien, Deputy Head of the Science and Technology Department at Tra Vinh University, and Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue, Vice Rector of the College of Khmer Southern Language-Culture-Arts and Humanity (CLASKA), along with the project leadership team, lecturers, and students from the School of Education.

Dr. Phan Thi No stated that the workshop served as a forum for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and discussing the design of teacher training programs based on constructivist principles. She highlighted the shift in focus from “what to teach” to “how to teach,” emphasizing constructivist teaching methods as the answer.

Dr. Tran Thanh Binh, a key member of the research team, explained the importance of constructivist theory as a foundation for modern education in Vietnam. Constructivist teaching stresses the active role of the learner, with the teacher acting as a facilitator, guide, and creator of a positive learning environment.

Ms. Huynh Thi Ngoc Lan, a member of the team, noted a crucial step in the project: designing a teacher training program on constructivist teaching that meets the objectives and effectiveness of the 2018 national curriculum. This involved research, assessment of the local context, and incorporating feedback to refine the program content.

Participants openly discussed challenges and shared their teaching experiences. They contributed to the design of the constructivist teaching training program and offered solutions to enhance primary school teachers’ teaching capabilities in the context of current educational reforms.

The workshop is a vital step in gathering and incorporating feedback to finalize the core components of the training program, ensuring it stays on track to meet its objectives and timeline.
