Scientific workshop “Improving the law to develop the marine economy in the trend of ASEAN integration.”

TVU – On May 24, the School of Economics and Law under Tra Vinh University organized a scientific workshop titled “Improving the Law to Develop the Marine Economy in the Trend of ASEAN Integration.” The event is an essential academic forum that promotes research activities, exchanges expertise, and proposes legal solutions to serve the goal of sustainable development of the marine economy in the context of deep international integration.

The workshop welcomed leading experts, including Prof. Dr. Vo Khanh Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Council of Professors of Law, former Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; and Assoc. Prof. Dr.Phung Trung Tap, a law expert at the School of Economics and Law – Tra Vinh University.

On the side of the School of Economics and Law, there were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, the School’s Principal; Dr. Diep Huyen Thao, Dean of the Faculty of Law; Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Hieu; and Dr. Phan Minh Gioi, Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Law. In addition, the conference also attracted a large number of lecturers, graduate students, researchers, alums, and 123 students majoring in Law.

The workshop’s executive committee included Prof. Dr. Vo Khanh Vinh, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phung Trung Tap and Dr. Diep Huyen Thao.

In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, Principal of the School of Economics and Law, emphasized the importance of perfecting the legal system in the marine economy – one of the key strategic development priorities of Vietnam today. The Principal affirmed that the conference is a valuable opportunity for researchers, lecturers, and students to exchange academic knowledge, publish research results, and make practical contributions to building effective legal policies.

The workshop received 31 scientific papers, of which five typical papers were selected to be presented and discussed at the event, including “Some exchanges on compensation for damage caused by polluting the marine environment” presented by MSc. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Legal Department of Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company, which focuses on legal and practical aspects of handling liability for compensation for damage caused by marine environmental pollution while making recommendations to improve the Civil Code and the Law on Environmental Protection; “Improving the provisions of the Vietnamese Criminal Law on the crime of destroying aquatic resources” presented by GVC. Nguyen Chi Hieu, Can Tho University, which analyzes the shortcomings in the current provisions of the Criminal Code and proposes amendments to improve the effectiveness of preventing and combating acts of harming aquatic resources; “Vietnamese law on marine environmental protection in sustainable economic development – Comparison with Singaporean law and lessons learned” presented by PhD. MSc. Vu Thi Bich Hai, Faculty of Law, Van Lang University, which emphasizes Singapore’s advanced legal model in marine environmental management, thereby drawing valuable recommendations for Vietnam; “Sustainable development of the marine economy – Perspective from the protection of geographical indications” presented by Dr. Nguyen Phan Khoi, clarifying the role of geographical indications in enhancing the value of marine products and protecting the economic and cultural interests of coastal communities and “Legal issues on international maritime transport contracts” presented by MSc. Nguyen Thi My Tien, analyzing legal issues arising from international maritime transport contracts, recommends applying international treaties to harmonize laws in the context of integration.

The presentations received much attention and lively discussion from delegates and participants, opening up many directions for further research and cooperation in the future.

The workshop concluded by creating a solid foundation for further scientific activities on Law and marine economic development while contributing to improving research and teaching capacity in Maritime Law and regional integration.
