Tra Vinh University promotes 3R Youth Project: small actions create significant impact

TVU – Ms. Thao Vy, an 8th-grade Dai Phuc Secondary School (class 8C) student, actively participates in her school’s anti-plastic pollution movement. Like many classmates, she believes in the power of collective action: “Even a small action can make a big impact on society.”

During breaks and after school hours, Ms. Thao Vy and her friends collect plastic bottles, scrap paper, and soda cans from around the school grounds. They extend their cleanup efforts to their desks, the route to school, and the area surrounding the school gate. “These items, often considered worthless, can pollute our environment if left unchecked,” Vy explains, “but through the simple act of collecting and recycling, we unlock the hidden potential of these materials, turning them into engines of hope and opportunities to help others.”

Though seemingly minor, their actions have developed into meaningful contributions that benefit Cang Long District students facing challenging circumstances. “This year, 30 million VND was contributed to build a ‘Red Scarf House’ for underprivileged students in Cang Long,” reports teacher Minh Phung, head of student affairs at Dai Phuc Secondary School. “The collective efforts of students raised this significant sum district-wide through sorting and selling recyclable plastic waste, and part of that came from the efforts of students like Thao Vy,” he adds.

At this small rural school in Dai Phuc, environmental protection and the 3R philosophy—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—are now widely embraced and actively practiced by the entire school community.

The management team of the 3R Youth Project believes that young people like Thao Vy, with their strong environmental awareness, will continue to spread this message far and wide. They hope to see more “environmental ambassadors” like Vy throughout Vietnam. As Vy reminds us, “The effort and perseverance of each individual contribute to a GREENER – CLEANER – MORE BEAUTIFUL planet. I truly believe that if we all join hands, the environment will reward our efforts! Let’s take action today for a greener future!”

About the 3R Youth Project

The 3R Youth Project is a meaningful initiative funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)—Embassy of Canada to Vietnam. Its primary goal is to raise awareness and encourage action among young people regarding reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic waste.

The project focuses on developing environmentally friendly habits among students, encouraging them to sort waste, recycle plastic bottles and scrap paper, and use recyclable waste to raise funds for those facing significant educational challenges.

The project helps foster responsibility, increase community awareness, and spread human values among young people through practical activities such as collecting plastic waste for fundraising and participating in environmental awareness programs.

The project helps students understand the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment while inspiring concrete actions to transform waste into meaningful value for society. This represents an important step in developing a generation of young people who are responsible for the environment and their community.
