TVU Promotes environmental sustainability through student initiatives

The TVU student environmental club recently held a “Knowledge for Plastic – Exchange Plastic Waste for School Supplies” program.

This initiative, part of the larger 2025 “Unitour – Embracing Vietnamese Culture” series organized by the Vietnam Student Support and Development Center, encourages students to recycle plastic waste like bottles, bags, and polystyrene.

According to club member Duong Ngoc Han, the program aims to raise awareness of waste sorting and proper recycling practices. The club plans to continue these events to boost student participation. The exchange rate is one kilogram of single-use plastic waste (like HDPE plastic bags, polystyrene, and plastic cups) for a set of school supplies; 20 PET plastic bottles for a notebook, pen, or ruler; and 10 aluminum cans for the same.

Duong Ngoc Han, President of the Environmental Club, shares that the program aims to promote and encourage students to change their awareness and form habits of waste sorting at source and proper recycling processing. The club will continue expanding this model in the coming time, hoping to spread the green living message more powerfully to all students.

TVU’s commitment to environmental sustainability

The university boasts extensive green spaces, promotes energy-efficient policies, and utilizes renewable solar energy via an inverter system to support teaching, learning, and research. Air quality monitoring systems assess the cleanliness of the air on campus and in Tra Vinh city. The university also incorporates environmental protection skills into soft skills courses across all disciplines and has invested in developing programs in biotechnology focused on sustainable agriculture and food safety.

Its Environmental Science and Technology Institute, established in 2017 and expanded in 2021 to include Environmental Resource and Management, fosters highly specialized environmental professionals. This institute facilitates student internships abroad, such as in the Netherlands, through programs like Erasmus+ and MangLub, providing opportunities for international collaboration on environmental projects and exploring innovative uses of plastic waste as an alternative energy source.

TVU – Pioneer for a green future

Tra Vinh University’s dedication to environmental responsibility is evident in its signing of the Talloires Declaration in 2013, its consistent ranking among the top 200 universities for green education and sustainable development according to the UI GreenMetric Ranking, and its ongoing commitment to creating a truly green campus.
