Vibrant celebration of Chol Chnam Thmay at Tra Vinh University

TVU – On April 5th, Tra Vinh University is hosting a spectacular cultural and arts program to celebrate the Traditional Khmer New Year – Chol Chnam Thmay 2024, which has attracted over 1,000 attendees for outdoor activities.

Attending the art performance program, Tra Vinh University is honoured to welcome Buddhist monks from temples in Tra Vinh City, the Tra Vinh Pali Secondary School; Dr Nguyen Thi Bach Van, Director of the Tra Vinh Department of Education and Training, Mrs. Trinh Thi Phuong, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Tra Vinh Women’s Union, representatives from provincial departments and agencies, as well as artists from the Khmer Arts Troupe “Anh Binh Minh” of Tra Vinh.

On the side of Tra Vinh University, there are Prof. Dr Pham Tiet Khanh, Chairman of the University Council; Dr Thach Thi Dan, Vice-Rector; Dr Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Chairman of the Advisory Council; staff, students, and Cambodian and Laotian international students.

The diverse and lively arts performance program includes special performances such as “Chom Reung Cha Pay” and “Yeakrom” dance, singing, dancing, and artistic performances, which are staged by Tra Vinh University students together with the participation of the Khmer arts groups from various units in the province. Notably, the program also features performances by Cambodian and Laotian international students studying at the university.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Thach Thi Dan, Vice Rector, states that the arts program is meticulously organized, wanting to bring the audience compelling and meaningful performances that contribute to preserving and promoting the national cultural identity. According to the Vice-Rector, 2023 ended with many outstanding achievements, including in the field of preserving and promoting Khmer cultural values, such as participating in the “2nd Southern Khmer Performing Arts Festival – 2023” in Tra Vinh, which resulted in 1 Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Tra Vinh Provincial People’s Committee, 3 Silver Medals for Actors; performances in Rajim City, Chattisgarh State, India; participation in the Performing Arts Forum, Folk Song Festival 2023 in Vinh City, Nghe An Province; supporting advanced dance classes and basic Khmer traditional music instrument classes for the Khmer ethnic community in 2023 in Tra On District, Vinh Long Province, etc.

These activities have contributed to promoting the Khmer culture and arts of the South to all parts of the country and the international community, inspiring and awakening the passion for national culture and arts among the youth and Khmer students and contributing to the preservation of culture among the Khmer ethnic community in the province.

On this occasion, on behalf of the university’s leadership, Dr. Thach Thi Dan extends her New Year’s greetings to all employees, students, Cambodian and Laotian international students, and artists. She wishes them a prosperous New Year with abundant harvests, happiness and success.

The art performance program is combined with other activities such as: Presenting gifts to honour artists who have contributed to and supported Tra Vinh University in the field of culture and arts, awarding the “Implementing Gender Equality Video Clip Competition for Students in Tra Vinh City”, rewarding Khmer students with outstanding academic achievements, and awarding prizes for male football and female volleyball competitions among students, as well as scholarships for Khmer students with exemplary academic performance and participation in student activities.

In the afternoon of the same day, lively outdoor activities are organized, such as a cultural space, free cuisine, folk games, and performances of the “rom vong” and “saravan” dances, organized by the Community Service Center in collaboration with the Southern Khmer Language, Culture and Arts School and the Humanities Department. These activities create a colourful space for visitors to experience, exchange, and appreciate.
