Chinese Linguistics

Program objectives

The Chinese Linguistics program follows an application-oriented design to meet the needs of employers and relevant parties. It provides students with basic knowledge of social sciences, political science, law, information technology, and foreign languages. It teaches them to plan, organize, supervise, manage, and operate professional activities in fields that use the Chinese language. Students gain knowledge of Chinese language, literature, and culture and can use Chinese proficiently at the HSK5/TOCFL5 level (equivalent to level C1), with a special focus on translation skills.

The program also equips students with the skills to solve complex problems; to lead, start businesses, and create jobs for themselves and others. They learn to think critically, evaluate work quality and team performance, communicate problems and solutions in the workplace, and share knowledge and skills for specific or complex tasks. Furthermore, the program trains students to work independently or in teams, taking personal and group responsibility, guiding others, and managing resources effectively. They can also self-direct, form professional conclusions, and defend their personal viewpoints.


Program duration

The Bachelor of Chinese Linguistics is a 3.5-year program, which includes 7 semesters and 132 credits.


Target applicants

The program admits students from both within and outside the country, following the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the specific rules of Tra Vinh University.

Learning outcomes

Regarding knowledge, graduates can apply foundational knowledge of politics, law, health, and national defense to practical situations. They can apply knowledge of Chinese phonetics, characters, vocabulary, and grammar to translation, teaching, and research. They learn to apply translation theory to practical work and use skills from internships to adapt to the work environment. Graduates can also apply research theory and knowledge of Chinese language, culture, and East Asian Sinographic literature to conduct research projects or take alternative modules to enhance their professional knowledge.

In terms of skills, graduates can adapt, build independent and group work schedules, and present issues clearly. They can apply translation principles to Vietnamese-Chinese translation in fields like literature, education, tourism, and commerce. They can use Chinese communication skills (at an HSK5/TOCFL5 equivalent level) and English (at a B1 equivalent level) in international work environments. If they choose the teaching methods course, they can design lesson plans and organize creative learning activities. They can also use office applications and basic IT knowledge for practical work.


Scholarship opportunities

Students can apply for scholarships under the general policies of the Ministry of Education and Training and Tra Vinh University. Additional scholarships include:

  • Scholarships for the valedictorian and salutatorian.

  • Annual scholarships for good and excellent students, and for students with difficult circumstances.

  • The university also has many support programs, offering tuition and dormitory fee exemptions and reductions for students.


Career opportunities after graduation

Graduates can work as translators/interpreters in agencies, organizations, and services that require Chinese-Vietnamese translation. They can be secretaries, assistants, managers, general affairs staff, specialists, or employees in businesses that use the Chinese language. They can also work as researchers in research institutes or as Chinese language teachers in educational institutions.


Postgraduate opportunities

After graduating, students in Chinese Linguistics have the full capacity to continue their studies to a higher professional level. They can participate in short-term training courses in Chinese Linguistics in Vietnam and abroad. They can pursue a second bachelor’s degree in a related major. They can also enroll in postgraduate programs (Master’s, Ph.D.) in Chinese Linguistics at universities in Vietnam or abroad.
