Music Studies

Program objectives

The Music Studies program aims to provide students with basic knowledge of social sciences, political science, law, and information technology. It teaches them to plan, organize, supervise, manage, and operate professional activities in the field of musical arts, especially Southern Khmer Folk Music. The program also enables students to apply foundational technical knowledge to their professional work.

The program also equips students with necessary skills to solve complex problems; to lead, start businesses, and create jobs for themselves and others. They learn to think critically, evaluate work quality and team performance, communicate problems and solutions in the workplace, and share knowledge and skills for specific or complex tasks.

Furthermore, the program trains students to work independently or in teams in changing work environments, taking personal and group responsibility. They gain the ability to guide and supervise others, plan and manage resources, and evaluate and improve activities. They can also self-direct, form professional conclusions, and defend their personal viewpoints.


Admission subject combinations

The program accepts applicants from the following combination:

  • Combination N00 includes Literature, Music Aptitude 1 (Aural Skills: Pitch and Rhythm), and Music Aptitude 2 (Instrumental or Vocal Performance).


Program duration

The Bachelor of Music Studies is a 3.5-year program, which includes 7 semesters and 120 credits.


Target applicants

The program admits students from both within and outside the country, following the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the specific rules of Tra Vinh University.

Learning outcomes

Regarding knowledge, graduates can apply foreign language skills at level 3 of the 6-level Vietnamese Foreign Language Competency Framework and basic IT skills to their studies and professional work. They apply knowledge of Marxism-Leninism and Vietnamese political lines to act correctly in life. They use basic knowledge in Arts and Social Sciences to generalize music concepts, analyze music history, and connect theory to practice. Graduates can analyze musical works and apply research methods to evaluate and preserve the values of folk music.

In terms of skills, graduates can preserve and promote Southern Khmer folk music. They can analyze data and apply technology to their work. They learn to be creative in cultural activities, such as composing, evaluating, and critiquing musical works. They can perform on common and traditional Southern Khmer instruments and perform vocals in various styles. They learn to build community art programs, identify challenges in cultural preservation, and propose solutions. Graduates can use music notation software for transcription and composition. They also develop skills in scientific research, solo and ensemble performance, using the electronic keyboard, organizing grassroots cultural activities, teamwork, public speaking, and confident communication in artistic collaborations.


Scholarship opportunities

Students can apply for scholarships under the general policies of the Ministry of Education and Training and Tra Vinh University. Additional scholarships include:

  • Scholarships for the valedictorian and salutatorian.

  • Annual scholarships for good and excellent students, and for students with difficult circumstances.

  • The university also offers many support programs, including a 30% tuition fee reduction for students.


Career opportunities after graduation

Graduates can work at Departments and Offices of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Cultural Centers at all levels. They can be specialists at research and management agencies for ethnic music and cultural arts. They can teach music at general schools, colleges, and universities, as well as at vocational and arts colleges. They can also work as reporters and music editors at radio and television stations and press agencies, especially in areas with large ethnic minority and Southern Khmer populations. Another option is working in youth union activities at union branches and schools.


Postgraduate opportunities

Graduates can continue to study at higher levels, such as Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Music Studies (or related fields) at domestic or foreign training institutions.
