Tra Vinh University’s College of Medicine and Pharmacy (CMP) holds a ceremony celebrating International Nurses Day on May 8th with over 500 nursing students attending. The event honors the nursing profession’s rich history and recognizes nurses’ dedication.
Distinguished guests include Dr. Phan Quoc Nghia, Vice Rector of Tra Vinh University; Mr. Pham Quoc Khanh, Deputy Head of the Student Affairs Office; People’s Doctor and Professor Ta Van Tram, Rector of CMP; Dr. Nguyen Doan Hoai and Dr. Doan Duong Chi Thien, Vice Rectors of CMP; and Dr. Huynh Thi Hong Thu, Head of the Nursing Department.
Representatives from Tra Vinh Provincial Department of Health, nearby hospitals, and international experts also participate. These include Professor Lynda Boyer Chu from the University of San Francisco, USA, and Dr. Nguyen Minh Chau from Debrecen University, Hungary. Ms. Nguyen Bich Luu, Vice President of the Vietnam Nursing Association, attends online.
Dr. Phan Quoc Nghia highlights nurses’ critical and irreplaceable role in healthcare. He emphasizes their frontline contributions during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and their unwavering commitment to patient care. He describes nursing as a noble profession demanding strong skills, compassion, and dedication.
Professor Ta Van Tram discusses the nursing profession’s strong growth and international integration. He calls for increased investment in nursing education, research, and standardization to meet evolving healthcare demands.
The ceremony includes a Florence Nightingale lamp procession, honoring the founder of modern nursing. Professor Lynda Boyer Chu presents ten scholarships, each worth 2 million VND, to nursing students facing financial hardship, commemorating the 60th anniversary of International Nurses Day.
A “Nursing Student Beauty” contest also takes place. Bui Nhat Hao and Phan Thi My Duyen (Nursing Class C – 21st cohort) win first prize; Ho Minh Khuong and Luu Thao Nguyen (Nursing Class C – 21st cohort) take second; and Thach Du Kenve and Tran Khanh Han (Nursing Class A – 22nd cohort) win third. Phan Thanh Trung and Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi (Nursing Class A – 24th cohort) receive an encouragement award.
Bui Do Nhu Ngoc, a student from the 2023 cohort, expresses that International Nurses Day provides an opportunity to appreciate nursing faculty and professionals while deepening their understanding of professional ideals, motivating them to become dedicated and responsible nurses.
