During the journey, participants offer incense at the Hang Duong Cemetery Martyrs’ Memorial, visit the Con Dao Museum, and tour historical sites such as Phu An and Phu Binh Prisons, as well as the French and American “tiger cages.” They hear moving stories about the courage and sacrifice of tens of thousands of Vietnamese revolutionaries and patriots who are imprisoned and martyred there from 1862 to 1975. Through these visits, TVU members gain a deeper admiration for the resilience and patriotism of those who fight for national independence and peace.
The delegation also visits several other cultural and spiritual landmarks in Con Dao, including Van Son Pagoda (Nui Mot Pagoda) – a sacred pagoda perched on a mountain offering panoramic views of the island; An Son Temple (Phi Yen Temple) – dedicated to Lady Phi Yen, a symbol of loyalty and virtue in the Nguyen dynasty; and Prince Cai Temple, commemorating the short-lived son of King Gia Long.
Beyond its historical and cultural significance, the trip allows participants to experience Con Dao’s pristine natural beauty – unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear waters, and fresh air. The group also witnesses impressive local sustainability initiatives such as recycled banners, the “Green Offering Basket” model at Hang Duong Cemetery, and plastic-free school projects, showcasing Con Dao’s efforts to build a “green – clean – beautiful” future where environmental preservation goes hand in hand with development.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nhat Thanh, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vinh Long Provincial Confederation of Labor and Chairman of the TVU Trade Union: “This trip is not only an opportunity to revisit the nation’s heroic history but also a chance for union members to gain a greater appreciation for the tremendous sacrifices of previous generations in their fight for independence and freedom. It inspires every member to work with greater dedication and responsibility, contributing to the sustainable development of Tra Vinh University. The activity also meaningfully celebrates the 95th anniversary of Vietnamese Women’s Day, honoring the contributions of women in the family, the university, and society.”
