(TVU) – In the morning of September 29, the celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of Hero of Labor, People’s Doctor, Prof.Dr. Doctor. Colonel Nguyen Thien Thanh and the review of 10-year operation of the Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship was taken place at Tra Vinh University.
In the celebration, there were attendances of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Member of the Politburo, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee with his mother and family, Mr. Tran Tri Dung, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee, together with the provincial leaders, the former leaders who are members of the Party Central Committee, former leaders of Cuu Long province, former leaders of Tra Vinh province over periods, leaders of provincial departments, districts, towns, cities, unions, companies, businesses inside and outside the province and more than 1,000 students and teachers.
During the program, all delegates, students and teachers were allowed to watch a documentary called “Doctor Filatov” published by Vietnam Television and Documentary Center, on life and career of Professor Nguyen Thien Thanh.
Mr. Le Van Han, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee summarized biography and career life of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh, acknowledging his contributions in health sector of the country as well as in setting up the scholarship named Mr. and Mrs. Prof Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship for students in Tra Vinh homeland.
The Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh province said: “Today, we celebrate the 100th birthday anniversary of Labor of Hero, People’s Doctor, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh. This is our wish on expressing the respect and gratitude from all people in Tra Vinh province for great merits which Prof. Nguyen Thien Thanh has devoted his whole life to serve our fatherland and the people as well as to build our health sector. We highly appreciate the great contribution of Prof. Nguyen Thien Thanh and his family to education and training in Tra Vinh province ”.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh was known as the Doctor Filatov, the person who laid the foundation for geriatric specialty, the dedicated teacher, the expert against malaria,… Life and career of Labor of Hero, People’s Doctor, Prof. Nguyen Thien Thanh are the process of continuous striving and tireless dedication to the development of military’s and people’s health sectors.
He is one of the cadres of the “golden” generation and the backbone of our country’s health leaving a shining example of medical ethics for generations.
Tra Vinh homeland is proud of having excellent children giving many contributions which are worthy of the country, typically as Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh. The provincial Party Committee and people always love and respect him. Tra Vinh High School for the Gifted is honored to be called by the name of Nguyen Thien Thanh High School for the Gifted. Tra Vinh University is also located on the road of his name.
Doctor Nguyen Hong Trung, former director of Vinh Long Department of Health, has had many opportunities to work and engage with Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh and the country’s medicine by two periods of resistances against France and American, deeply understands about life, career and great contributions of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh whom Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung always admires and considers as an elder brother, a teacher in his life and in medicine. “It is the life of a patriotic intellectual who has made great contributions in each historical period of the country, undergone many hardships and taken on many responsibilities. Wherever he is, with any position, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh has shown his talent and virtue and successfully fulfilled the role entrusted by the Party and people”, Doctor Nguyen Hong Trung shared.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan was touched to recall what he admired most about Prof. Nguyen Thien Thanh is that there were three times of saying no to favorable conditions for himself. “The first time was when Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh got a scholarship to study in France. He did refuse to go because he wanted to study medical major. The second time was when he was asked to hold a doctorate in the Soviet Union. He did not stay but expressed his desire to return to fight in the Southern battlefield because of thinking about the health of people. The third time of his saying no was after 1975, when he worked at Thong Nhat Hospital, he was proposed to be a Vice Minister of Health. At that time he said that it was better for him to be a doctor so that he could treat more compatriots.”
On behalf of family, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan thanked the leaders of the Provincial Party Committee, the People’s Council, the People’s Committee and The Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee of Tra Vinh province for attending the 100th birthday celebration of Hero of Labor, People’s Doctor, Prof. Dr. Doctor Nguyen Thien Thanh and 10-year operation of the Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship.
On this occasion, the Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship received more than VND 5.5 billion from his family and benefactors. In which, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s family continues to give 2 billion VND.
Mr. Tran Hoan Kim, Chairman of Management Council of Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship, said: “With the passionate attachment and the desire of contributing effort to his homeland, Mr. and Mrs. Professor Nguyen Thien Thanh have spent their retirement pension throughout their lives to provide scholarships for students who overcome difficulties and are studious in Tra Vinh province. Initially, the amount of money collected was 500 million VND. Thanks to contributions of benefactors, friends and family, the scholarship has increased with a total amount of over 15 billion VND”.
The scholarship has taken care and helped many students in Tra Vinh to overcome difficulties and to study well. The Scholarship Management Council together with the Department of Education and Training, the Study Encouragement Association, the Education and Training Office of the districts, towns and cities and the schools have awarded more than 1,700 scholarships for students in Tra Vinh province with the total amount of over VND 2.5 billion and continued to grant scholarships to poor students.
Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh’s Scholarship has brought practical effects to education and training career in Tra Vinh province in general, and to students in particular to encourage and actively support poor and good students so that they can continue to pursue their studying in the future.
On this occasion, the Mr. and Mrs. Professor Nguyen Thien Thanh’s scholarship granted 295 scholarships to students.
On behalf of 295 students who received the scholarships, Nguyen Thi Thu Van, a student of Nguyen Thien Thanh High School for the Gifted, was touched and said: “We were born in Tra Vinh homeland with good traditions including hard-working and studious tradition with shining examples of overcoming hardships to self-study. Especially the example of tireless studying and dedicating for the people and the country of Mr. Nguyen Thien Thanh. Receiving the scholarships in the 100th birthday celebration of Mr. Nguyen Thien Thanh is a great encouragement for us.”
Scholarship Management Council also launched and added new members. Mr. Le Van Han, Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh People’s Committee was assigned by the Provincial People’s Committee to be the Chairman of Management Council of Mr. and Mrs. Professor Nguyen Thien Thanh’s scholarship.
