GD&DT – The inauguration ceremony for the Institute of Biotechnology, an affiliated unit of the university, is held early on March 1 at Tra Vinh University.

The Institute of Biotechnology includes the main building of the total area of 2,768 square meters, a 500 square meters of leaf vegetables research farm, a 500 square meters of root vegetables research farm, a 1000 square meters of orchards research farm, a 1000 square meters of medicinal plants research farm, a 1000 square meters of tissue culture plant nursery, along with an area of over 6,000 square meters for other uses. Approximately, 188 billion VND have been invested in the project overall.

In accordance with Decision 23 of the University Council, the Institute of Biotechnology was established on August 1, 2023. The Provincial People’s Committee approved the investment policy for the project in September 2020. Budgets from the state, the province, and Tra Vinh University’s counterpart funds were used to carry out the project.

The Institute of Biotechnology is established to achieve the goal of fully and effectively exploiting the natural resources potential of Tra Vinh particularly, the Mekong Delta and Vietnam in general.

Utilizing modern machinery and equipment, the human resource of the institute will be able to conduct basic to advanced research in the areas of agricultural biotechnology, food, and medicine; mastering technical processes; applying technology to manufacturing, etc.

The rector of Tra Vinh University, Assoc. Prof., Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa, states in his remarks during the inauguration event that the establishment of the Institute of Biotechnology is expected to address issues related to enhancing the productivity and quality of healthcare for the people living in Tra Vinh and the Mekong Delta. It is the responsibility of the employees of the institute to accomplish these demands. Soon, there will be plenty of tasks that the staff have to complete in order to run and grow the institute in the near future.

The executive board of Tra Vinh University hopes that the staff will always reminisce about the contributions of previous generations of leaders in order to meet their expectations and those of the farmers who are eager to use the findings of their studies to boost productions and enhance their living standards.

Tra Vinh University holds on the same day a seminar on “Cooperation and Development Potentials of Applications of Biotechnology.” The event attracts many experts, scientists, lecturers, and students in the field of biotechnology. A wide range of topics are presented at the seminar, including the development and achievements of biotechnology in Tra Vinh, stem cells and their potential application in the treatment of diseases (Dr. Nguyen Truong Sinh, from the Stem Cell Institute under the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science), the new generation of gene sequencing tests on the MISEQ system (Ms. Pham Thi Tuong Oanh – Biomedic’s Field Application Scientist), and the trend of using the long-segment sequencing technology by Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) to increase productivity and enhance plant and animal varieties.

Also, the Institute of Biotechnology under Tra Vinh University signs MOUs with partners, including DKSH Technology Co., Ltd., LABone Scientific Equipment Co., Ltd.; and TSL Science Co., Ltd.
